| 28mm Austrians 1792-1798 | The Austrians were undoubtedly Republican France’s most consistent opponents – at least on land – between the outbreak of the Revolutionary Wars in 1792 and the Peace of Amiens in 1802. During this period Austrian armies confronted French forces in Flanders, Germany and Italy in multiple front campaigns on an almost annual basis, with varying degrees of success. What began as something of a half hearted attempt to restore Louis XVI to the throne of France soon evolved into a desperate fight to save the Imperial territories from French expansion, and ultimately even the Hapsburg monarchy itself from the ambitions of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Our new figures wear the short coat with large turn-backs, and the characteristic false fronted hat (casquet) common to all the Austro-Hungarian fusiliers from as far back as 1769. The grenadiers in their famous bearskin caps are also fully represented. Although this uniform was officially replaced by (principally) a new style coat and neo-classical helmet in 1798, it appears many units continued to wear elements of the old uniform (including the casquet hat) as late as the Marengo campaign in 1800 – so the Austrian infantryman’s appearance remained relatively fixed for almost 30 years. However, there had been some subtle changes in the years leading up to the French Revolution as the Austrian Army underwent a long, drawn out process of reform. For example the elaborately curled and powdered hair, common to soldiers in the great wars of the mid 18th Century, had been finally abandoned for the rank and file in the late 1780’s and replaced with a simple queue. Curls and powder were only retained by officers (and perhaps some NCO’s) who continued to wear wigs. Meanwhile officers were told to stop wearing showy waist sashes under their coats in 1785 – with just the sword belt now representing their status. (Although it should be noted that this may not have been universally popular and senior officers at least may have kept them. Sashes were to be reinstated for all officers with the new uniform in 1798). The range reflects these subtleties and includes fusilier and grenadier versions with all appropriate command figures and musicians – for both Austrian and Hungarian units. Available poses include the ubiquitous march-attack, as well as ‘advancing’ figures, and firers and loaders.

Here are the catalogue details for the new miniatures – plus details of our New Release Special Offers.
