The Austrians fought out two major wars during the 1860s. The Second Schleiswig-Holstein War (1864) saw them allied with Prussia as the latter tried (for the second time) to wrest control of Schleiswig-Holstein from the Danes. The campaign was a success, but two years later Austria found herself locked in a struggle with her erstwhile ally, Prussia, to decide who was the dominant Germanic power in central Europe (The Austro-Prussian War of 1866). Austria had to fight on several fronts thanks to a declaration of war from Italy, and despite victory against the Italians at Custozza, the Prussians were ultimately victorious at the great Battle of Königgrätz (Sadowa). This war is one of those bloody affairs where the Industrial Revolution and the new military technologies really began to make their presence felt on the battlefield.
Our Austrians are wearing the characteristic turned back great coats, and belt equipment appropriate to 1864-66.
