Historical Context
This army represents the Gutians during their "Great Revolt" - the period when these Zagros mountain warriors swept down from the highlands to conquer the Akkadian Empire and establish over a century of rule (2250-2112 BC). What began as highland resistance transformed into conquest, as Gutian kings claimed the throne of Mesopotamia and controlled the ancient urban centers.
The Gutian armies combined their fierce highland warriors - axemen, javelineers, and bowmen in animal hides - with conquered Sumerian troops including disciplined pikemen and the prestigious straddle cart and Meluhkhans from the Indus Valley. This fusion of mountain warfare traditions with Mesopotamian military organization created formidable forces that dominated the region until the Sumerian revival under Ur-Nammu.
Sculpted by Alan Marsh with additional poses by Kosta Heristanidis, these figures capture the transition from highland raiders to imperial rulers.
